Restricted Substances analysis

The optional GRANTA MI:Restricted Substances package can be used to analyze and report on risks relating to substances whose use is restricted by legislation, or that may be at risk of obsolescence. The package provides:

• The Restricted Substances database, which contains information about substances that are named in legislations that restrict their use, or that appear on industry lists of substances likely to be restricted in future. These substances may be present in materials, coatings, or bought-in articles, or may be referred to in specifications.
• The Substances toolbar button and the Restricted Substances page in MI:Viewer. This page provides a number of useful, preconfigured search queries for assessing the legislative impact on your in-house materials, bought-in articles, and material & process specifications. Also available on this page are templates for creating new legislation and substance records, and some standard substance declaration form templates.
• A number of Analysis Reports which provide detailed information on restricted substance risks in materials or substances in your Record List.

Note that the Substances toolbar button will only appear if  the MI:Restricted Substances package is enabled in your MI system (this is done by the MI application administrator in MI:Server Manager).

Searching the Restricted Substances database

Click Substances on the toolbar to open the Restricted Substances page, where you can run a number of different searches. For Help on any of the searches, click  next to the search definition.

Search & Update tab:

• Search for legislations, regulations, and industry and customer lists
• Search for restricted substances by entering the CAS number ("7439-88-5"), EC number ("629-732-4"), or Chemical name ("Barium arsenide")
• Search for materials, coatings, or articles

Risk & Obsolescence tab:

• Use the pre-defined queries under the Materials, Bought-in Articles, and Specification Management headings to find materials, articles, or specifications that may be linked to substances that are at risk.
• Under REACH Risk Assessment, perform searches of Granta’s MaterialUniverse, ProcessUniverse, and Coatings data to help you understand where restricted substances on the REACH Candidate List or SIN 2.1 (Substitute It Now!) list may be found within your organization.

Your search results can be added to the Record List and then used with the standard reporting, charting, and exporting features of MI:Viewer.

Adding your own Restricted Substances data

You can download templates that enable you to import legislations, regulations, and industry lists, and lists of substances linked to them: on the Search and Update tab, click on the link under Import Your Own Lists to see the available templates.

For materials, coatings, and bought-in articles, you can import Restricted Substances declarations provided by the supplier: on the Search and Update tab, click on the link under Supplier Declaration Gathering and then click to download a template declaration form.

Analyze and report on Restricted Substances risks

For further analysis of a list of materials or substances of interest, you can use the Restricted Substances reports. These are available on the Reports page in MI:Viewer.
