Substances to Specifications report

The Substances to Specification report enables you to understand the organizational impact of particular substances of interest that may be linked to coatings, in-house materials, or specifications in your Granta database.

You can run this report on a list of substances in MI:Viewer. For each substance analyzed, the report finds:

Understanding the layout of the Results sheet

On the Results sheet, each row in the table represents a link or association that has been found between a substance (shown in the columns to the left) and a material, coating, or specification (shown in the color-coded groups of columns to the right).

There are a number of different ways in which a substance might be linked to a material, coating, or specification: directly or indirectly, and (for specifications) via any number of intermediate steps. For each link found, data is shown in one or more of the color-coded sections, as applicable.

For each row:

If there is data in the Material or coating section, this represents a material or coating that is directly linked to the substance.

If there is data in the Specification section, this represents a specification that is linked to the substance, either directly or indirectly.

Note that a substance may be linked to a particular specification via more than one path (i.e., via different intermediate links). The report shows each distinct linking path between the substance and specification as a separate row in the table.

Information in each column

The column headers on the Results sheet are color-coded:

information about the substance analyzed

information about a material linked to the substance

information about a coating linked to the substance

information about a specification linked (directly or indirectly) to the substance

information about other specifications that act as intermediate links

Note: On your GRANTA MI system, the report may have been configured to include additional data about substances, in-house materials, coatings, or specifications. These additional columns may not conform to the standard color-coding. For information about any columns not described in this guide, see your Granta data administrator.

Substance analyzed

Chemical name

The name of the substance, as specified in your Restricted Substances database.

CAS number

The unique identifier assigned to the substance by the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) Registry.

Material directly linked to the substance

Material ID

The unique identifier of the material in your Restricted Substances database.

Designation

The name of the material, as specified in your Restricted Substances database.

Supplier name

The supplier of the material.

Coating directly linked to the substance

Coating

The name of the coating, as specified in your Restricted Substances database.

Specification linked (directly or indirectly) to the substance

Specification ID

The unique identifier of the specification in your Restricted Substances database.

Type

The type of specification – e.g., Material specification, Process specification, Departure.

Action (for departures)

For a specification that is defined in your Restricted Substances database as being a departure from another specification: the action that it represents in terms of modifying the earlier specification, e.g., Add, Remove.

Supersessions and/or equivalences

For a specification that is defined in your Restricted Substances database as being  equivalent to another specification, and/or superseding another specification: details of every specification that it supersedes or is equivalent to.

Specification name

The name of the specification, as defined in your Restricted Substances database.

Specification revision date

The date that the specification was last revised, or the date it was issued (for a specification that has not been revised).

Specification revision letter

The letter identifying the specification revision (where applicable).

Status

The status of the specification – e.g., active, obsolete.

Other specifications that act as intermediate links

IDs of linking specifications

Where the linking path between the substance and the specification is via a reference to another specification: the Specification ID of the intermediate link.

Note that if the linking path is via two or more intermediate links, they are shown in the order [Specification ->] Link 1 -> Link 2 [-> Substance]

Example

Substance X is indirectly linked to Specification A, as follows –

Specification A is a departure from Specification B

Specification B references Specification C

Specification C calls out Substance X

The linking path between Substance X and Specification A is shown in this column as  Specification B -> Specification C
