Watching records and data
You can monitor records and data of interest in the current database
by adding them to a watch list.
When any of your watched items changes, notifications will be generated
which you can view on the Notifications
tab in MI:Viewer Settings; see Notifications.
Note If
your MI administrator has turned the Notifications feature off, you will
be unable to add items to a watch list or view notifications.
You can add tables, folders, records, and data to a watch list.
- Watching data means that
you are watching the data for an attribute in a record. This specifically
refers to the attribute/record pair, not to all values for that attribute
in the table. You can also watch metadata, however, changes to metadata
do not affect its parent attribute data.
- Watching a folder or table means that you are interested
in all the records it contains, without having to add them all individually
to your watch list.
Adding
items to your watch list
You can add a record to your watch list from the Contents tree, from
search results, or from a datasheet. You can add record data (attributes)
to the watch list from the record datasheet.
To add a record, folder, or table to the watch list
- Click next to the item name in the Contents
list and then click Watch folder/record/table on
the menu.
To add a data item to the watch list
- Display the datasheet for the record of interest.
- On the Tools menu, select
Watch Data.
- Locate and select one or more attributes.
- Once all desired attributes have been selected, click Continue.
- To see the selections you made, view the Watch list (Settings
> Watch List).
Note that:
- It is the record-attribute combination that is being watched.
- Metadata for the selected attribute is not watched. If you wish
to watch the metadata for an attribute, you must watch the metadata
itself, or the record.
- You may add watches to attributes that contain no data value. You
will be notified if a data value is added.
