Advanced search

MI:Viewer's Advanced Search feature allows you to add criteria to a basic search and specify required property values ("Young's modulus is at least 0.1 10^6 psi").  You can also search for substitutes for a reference record based on selected properties of that record.

Click Advanced Search in the MI:Viewer toolbar to open the Advanced Search page, then click Start a new search.

Limiting the search to a specific table

To limit the search results to a specific table, select a table from the Limit results to list.

Building a search query

You can enter search terms and phrases in the Search for box, including the same special characters and search operators as a quick search.

Click More >>> to display options for building complex Boolean expressions, for example:

Search field Boolean operator Text entered Finds...
- ALL these words AND steel alloy Records containing both terms
- this EXACT phrase Phrase Search steel alloy Records containing the phrase "steel alloy"
- at least ONE of these words OR steel alloy Records containing the words "steel" or "alloy"
- NONE of these words NOT steel alloy Records that do not contain the words "steel" or "alloy"

Specifying attribute search criteria

You can specify the attributes you want to search and the values you are interested in. If criteria are entered for more than one attribute, the result is the intersection of the individual searches (this is equivalent to the AND operator in a search).

  1. Specify the attribute of interest by either:

Attributes in linked tables are listed under Linked tables in the browse tree. For example, you can find materials whose MaterialUniverse 'Density' is > 0.01 lb/in^3 and are linked to the ProcessUniverse 'Flat sheet' process.

  2. Specify the data values you are interested in by selecting the search criteria and then specifying the value(s).
  3. Click Search at the bottom of the Search page to search the database for records using the specified search string and attribute criteria.

After a search has been made, you can click Refine search in the Search Criteria box on the Search tab to return to the Search page again, and view and/or modify your search criteria.

Where there is no data for the specified attribute, the record will not be included in results for searches made on that attribute.

If an attribute has a value of Not Applicable, by default the record will not be included in search results on that attribute; however, this can be configured by changing the Pass Not Applicable application search option (in Settings > Options).

Search criteria quick reference

Criteria for all data types
Criteria name Function
exists Returns records where the attribute has a value
does not exist Returns records where the attribute has no value
Criteria for text data (Long text, Short text, File, Hyperlink attributes)
Criteria name Function
contains Returns records where the attribute value contains the specified string
Example: Tradenames contains duraplex
Criteria for numeric data
Criteria name Function
is at least Returns records where the attribute value is greater than or equal to x
is at most Returns records where the attribute value is less than or equal to x
is between Returns records where the attribute value is in the range between x and y
is Returns records where the attribute value is exactly equal to x
Criteria for dates
Criteria name Function
is on Returns records where the date is the same as x
is on or after Returns records where the date is after or the same as x
Example: Date of Analysis is on or after 12/8/2016
is on or before Returns records where the date is before or the same as x
Example: Forging date is on or before 6/3/1998
is between Returns records where the date is in the range between x and y
Example: Effective date 1/1/2000 to 12/31/2010
Criteria for other data types
Criteria name Function
is at least For a property that has a set of ordered values, returns records where the value is lower than or equal to x
Example: Transparency is at least Translucent
is at most For a property that has a set of ordered values, returns records where the value is higher than or equal to x#
Example: Flammability is at most Self-extinguishing
is Returns records where the property value is exactly the same as x
Example: Material form is Particulate composite; Coated is Yes

is not

Returns records where the property has any value except x.
Example: Polymer type is not ABS
For a tabular data property, the value may not occur in any of the rows.
is all of For a property that may have multiple values, returns records that contain all of the specified values
is one of For a property that may have multiple values, returns records that contain any one of the specified values
Example: Wear resistance is one of Excellent, Acceptable

Using functional data search criteria

For searches that include functional data, you can specify the data values of interest, for example, Tensile Stress/Strain, L is at least 440 MPa, and you can also specify the required parameter values, and/or omit parameters you are not interested in. For example, a search can return:

The default parameter values can be used in the search, or you can click on the Parameters link and specify the parameter values you are interested in. Click to see an example

Searching tabular data

Both local and linked tabular data can be specified as search criteria in an advanced attribute search.  Click to see an example

Where criteria are set for multiple tabular columns, a record is only returned if the values within the row satisfy all of the search criteria. Note, however, that if is not search criteria are included in the search, the specified value may not appear in ANY row of the tabular data. Click to see an example

Using a search mask

By default, text searches include all of the text properties on a datasheet (as defined by the current layout). By using a search mask, you can limit the scope of a text search to specified text/discrete attributes plus link notes. By default, record names (short and full) are not searched when using a search mask. Search masks are configured by your GRANTA MI Administrator.

To search using a search mask:
  1. Click More >>> and specify the search criteria in the Search for panel.
  2. Select a search mask from the Use search mask list.
  3. Click Search at the bottom of the Search page. You cannot specify additional attribute criteria when using a search mask.
