Legislation ratings in Restricted Substances analysis

For each substance that is named in a legislation or list, Granta Design assigns a legislation rating that indicates the degree of impact that the legislation or list has on the substance's use: for instance, whether it is banned completely or with exemptions for particular applications, or whether it is at risk of being banned or restricted in future.

These ratings are used in the Legislation Impacts on Materials and Legislation Impacts on Substances reports.

Legislation rating Definition
Banned The legislation specifically bans the use of the substance.
Banned with conditions The legislation either bans the use of the substance for particular applications, or specifically bans its use except for certain exempt applications.
To be phased out The legislation sets a deadline for the removal of the substance from the market. (Note that this category applies only if an explicit phase-out date has been specified.)
For example: SVHCs included in the Annex XIV (Authorisation List) of REACH.
Very high risk of phase-out The substance is targeted for removal from the marketplace, but a specific date has not yet been set.
For example: SVHCs proposed for inclusion in Annex XIV (Authorisation List) of REACH.
High risk of phase-out The substance is proposed or targeted for removal from the marketplace, but in a legislation or list other than those with the highest risk of phase-out.
For example: substances belonging to the Candidate List of SVHCs, and substances proposed for inclusion in the Candidate List by regulatory authorities.
Risk of phase-out The substance is likely to be targeted for phase-out in the marketplace.
For example: substances that meet the criteria for being an SVHC, but have not yet been added to the Candidate List of SVHCs, and have not been proposed for inclusion in the candidate list.
Caution The substance is named in an instrument of change other than law or regulation that affects substances in process or production materials.
For example: substances named in international treaties and voluntary industry standards. (Note that individual substances contained within these lists may also be restricted or banned by national legislative implementing measures.)
Unrated (n/a) Applies to substances that have been listed for reasons other than being within the scope of legislation affecting substances in production and processing materials.
For example: substances that are named in superseded legislations ('Superseded'), and records that are provided for reference purposes.
